Light of my Life

Writer, Director, Actor: Casey Affleck

Watching Casey Affleck work, as the Actor or as the Director, is to observe a lesson in Craft.

In either position, he is relentless in his pursuit of Truth.

If a stunt feels too controlled or a shot seems too contrived, he moves around the set, playing with his beard, deep in thought, like he is stalking Truth.

We, his faithful crew, hold onto all our ideas while he works it out.

Then, when he sees IT, he communicates to all the departments and then sees me, reminding him, not that he needs reminding but reminding nonetheless that its time for the Director to take a break while the Actor shows up to do his job.

A job he does better than most. But every take is more deeply invested than the one before.

Where Manchester by the Sea was big and sprawling, Light of my Life is small, intimate, powerful.

It was my honor to stand in waist high snow and serve this story, to serve this man and his imagination and extraordinary skill.
